How to Make a Classic Dry Gin Martini

The martini: a classic cocktail with a history as murky as the drink itself. It's made with gin or vodka and vermouth, and can be served in various ways. It became popular during Prohibition and has since become a symbol of sophistication (or at least pretending to be sophisticated). A classic dry gin martini is the world's most famous cocktail and few drinks can beat this simple recipe. There is no mystery to the martini — you only need your best gin and dry vermouth to stir (not shake!) one up.

Serve in – Martini glass or coupe glass

Garnish – Green Olive or Lemon Twist

Ingredients

  • 60ml Gin (We Suggest Fords Gin)

  • 15ml Dry Vermouth (We Suggest Dolin Dry Vermouth)

  • Garnish with Green Olive or Lemon Twist

Method

  1. Chill your cocktail glass (the easiest way is to fill it with ice)

  2. Add dry vermouth and gin to your shaker or stirring glass and stir the mixture until adequately diluted and chilled

  3. Strain into the chilled cocktail glass

  4. Garnish with either a twist of lemon peel or some green olives. If you’re using olives, try to use ones that aren’t oily

Bartender’s Advice

There are countless ways to adjust the formula and technique – gin or vodka, dry or wet or dirty, shaken or stirred, olive or lemon garnish. The only correct answer is how you enjoy it.
