How to Make a Spicy Margarita Cocktail

If you love cocktails with a little kick of heat, then add the people’s favourite fiery tipple — the Spicy Margarita — to your home repertoire. While you don’t need to spend big bucks on an expensive tequila, pass over the cheap stuff for a bottle that is labeled 100% agave for best results. And since we believe no margarita is complete without a salted rim, we’ve also included a simple recipe for you to mix up your own chili lime salt. It’s the perfect final touch that will not only decorate your glass, but also add another layer of flavour to your margarita!

Serve in — Rocks Glass

Garnish — Lime Wheel and Salt Rim

INGREDIENTS

  • 60ml Tequila Blanca (We suggest Espolon Tequila Blanca or Herradura Plata Tequila)

  • 30ml Fresh Lime Juice

  • 15ml Herradura Agave Nectar

  • 1-4 Jalapeño Slices (Depending on your preferred spice level)

  • Chilli Lime Salt to Rim the Glass

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CHILLI SALT (Alternatively, you can purchase Tajín Chilli & Lime Seasoning from Dan Murphy’s)

  • 1/4 Cup Sea Salt

  • 2 tbsp Chile Powder (Made from dried chilli’s — not to be confused with chilli powder)

  • 2 tsp Lime Zest

METHOD

  1. Rim the glass with chilli lime salt (optional) — moisten the outer rim of the glass with a slice of lime and place the upturned glass onto a plate of chilli lime salt, then place the glass to the side

  2. Add jalapeños to your cocktail shaker and muddle to release the flavour

  3. Add the tequila, lime and agave nectar to the cocktail shaker and fill with ice

  4. Shake vigorously to chill contents

  5. Double strain contents into your rocks glass

Bottom’s up!
