How to Make Limoncello
Limoncello is a traditional Italian liqueur made from vodka or neutral spirit that is infused with the zest of lemons. It is a sweet and tangy liqueur with a strong lemon flavour and a smooth, velvety texture. When to enjoy it, you ask? As a digestif, or used in cocktails and other beverages. It’s best served cold, either on its own or over ice. So, here’s a simple recipe for homemade limoncello!
Ingredients
1L Vodka
8-10 Lemons
2 Cups Granulated Sugar
2 Cups of Water
Instructions
Using a vegetable peeler, carefully remove the zest from the lemons in long, thin strips. Be sure to avoid the white pith, as it can give the limoncello a bitter taste.
Place the lemon zest in a large glass jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid.
Pour the vodka or neutral spirit over the lemon zest and seal the jar or bottle.
Place the jar or bottle in a cool, dark place for at least one week, or up to one month, to allow the flavours to infuse.
After the infusing period, make a simple (sugar) syrup by combining the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let the syrup cool to room temperature.
Strain the vodka or neutral spirit through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the lemon zest.
Combine the strained vodka or neutral spirit with the simple syrup in a clean glass jar or bottle. Seal the jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
