How to Make Limoncello

Limoncello is a traditional Italian liqueur made from vodka or neutral spirit that is infused with the zest of lemons. It is a sweet and tangy liqueur with a strong lemon flavour and a smooth, velvety texture. When to enjoy it, you ask? As a digestif, or used in cocktails and other beverages. It’s best served cold, either on its own or over ice. So, here’s a simple recipe for homemade limoncello!

Ingredients

  • 1L Vodka

  • 8-10 Lemons

  • 2 Cups Granulated Sugar

  • 2 Cups of Water

Instructions

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, carefully remove the zest from the lemons in long, thin strips. Be sure to avoid the white pith, as it can give the limoncello a bitter taste.

  2. Place the lemon zest in a large glass jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid.

  3. Pour the vodka or neutral spirit over the lemon zest and seal the jar or bottle.

  4. Place the jar or bottle in a cool, dark place for at least one week, or up to one month, to allow the flavours to infuse.

  5. After the infusing period, make a simple (sugar) syrup by combining the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let the syrup cool to room temperature.

  6. Strain the vodka or neutral spirit through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the lemon zest.

  7. Combine the strained vodka or neutral spirit with the simple syrup in a clean glass jar or bottle. Seal the jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
