How to Make an Old Fashioned with Rye Whiskey
The Rye Old Fashioned is very much a drinker's drink – a slug of whiskey, seasoned and sweetened. It is not for the faint of heart, but once acquired, it's a taste you'll relish. A good place to start is by using good whiskey, with the rule being that if you wouldn’t sip it by itself it has no place at the helm of a Rye Old Fashioned.
Serve in — Whiskey Glass
Garnish — Orange Peel or Orange Twist
Ingredients
60ml Rye Whiskey for a strong, spicy kick (We suggest Rittenhouse Rye Whisky, however your preferred Rye Whisky will do just fine)
10ml Simple (Sugar) Syrup
2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
Orange Peel or Orange Twist
Method
Add whiskey, sugar syrup and bitters to a glass
Add ice to glass
Using a cocktail spoon, stir until adequately diluted (to suit your palette)
Twist orange peel over cocktail and add to drink to garnish
Bartender’s Advice
The most common mistake is not stirring enough (the dilution and thorough combining of the ingredients are essential). The aim is to find the balance between texture and temperature. Too much stirring, and it’s too watery. Too little stirring, and you’ll have yourself a warm beverage that is potentially too boozy for your palette. Finally, if you prefer the smooth caramel notes of bourbon, try making your Old Fashioned with bourbon whiskey instead!
